Southeast Lauderdale High School Job Shadowing Program

It’s important for students to learn more than just math and reading in school and one high school are doing just that to prepare its students for the workforce.

Southeast Lauderdale High School has a hands-on job shadowing program for students to help prepare them for life out of High School. The Graduation Coach of Southeast Donna Sprayberry gives us more detail on their job shadowing initiative.

“For seniors getting ready to get out into the workforce, just giving them an opportunity to figure out what they're really interested in and what their goals are after high school and what their skill set is.”

Lauderdale County School Board Member Michael Wilson allowed some students to shadow him today.

“We're fixing to install a septic system for this new house here. And I'm just tickled as these young men wanted to come and be with me today to kind of see what it's about and see how to hopefully do things the right way.”

Wilson tells us why he thinks that job shadowing is important and why he felt it would help out students in the long run.

“Well, because I just feel like that's the only way these young men are going to learn anything. They're not going to learn it in a book. They're not going to learn it by somebody telling it to them. They're going to have to get out here and see somebody do it and hopefully see somebody do it.”

Tanner Haguewood a Senior at Southeast High tells us why he enjoys job shadowing over learning in the classroom.

“I don’t like learning in books at all and I do much better-doing things with my hands.”

Another Senior participating in Job Shadowing today tells us what makes it different than traditional learning.

“It’s very interesting to see how they do it and what it actually takes to do it.”
