Meridian, MS - Due to the constant dangerous heat affecting Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced a statewide burn ban for state parks and state fishing lakes because of the dry weather.
“Well, you know it’s hot now, I’ve been around here for a long time, and I can’t remember it ever being this hot.” says Frankie Haynes.
Frankie Haynes is a resident of Meridian and feels the burn ban is beneficial during this ongoing dangerous heat. “As hot as it is, and dry as things are, you know if you mess around and set something on fire, automatically it’s going to take off and turn into something huge, because things are so dry.”
To stop the risk of danger to parks and surrounding areas, the ban prohibits open fires such as campfires, bonfires, burn barrels, debris burning, and field burning. However, state park visitors are still able to use propane, gas, or charcoal grills, and propane or gas heaters.
“When you go to the parks and everything, you want to go to enjoy yourself, if you mess around and cause a forest fire, you know there’s no enjoyment in that. That creates panic and everything else, so just do the right thing so everyone can enjoy themselves, have fun, and enjoy the parks.”says Frankie Haynes.
According to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, burn bans are enforced by local law enforcement, and violations can result in fines ranging from $100 to $500.
