Students learn how to balance real life at Reality Fair.

Meridian, MS - Students of Lauderdale County attended a “Reality Fair” today, as a way to learn important skills of everyday life.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to see what it’s going to be like, to really just have an understanding of what it is to be an adult,” says Meridian Mutual Federal Credit Union Vice President; Samantha Blackwell.

According to Samantha Blackwell, the event was a great way for students to learn about real-life expenses and decisions. “They have to choose their housing, their transportation, insurance, clothing, their food, and keep all in budget at the same time. And we off those temptations to them as well, so they can see; “OK, yes, I’ve got my necessities I have to have, and these are my wants, can I afford my wants?””

For students, Brooklyn Whitmer, and Delaney White, budgeting was a big takeaway from the event. “I enjoyed learning more about finance and how I can spend money in the future,” says Whitmer. “Learning how to budget my money and learning how to spend it on certain things,” says White.

Students Kayleigh Briggs and Khloe Fisher plan to use the information they learned to motivate their life choices. “Make sure we get our needs, and our wants, instead of just randomly spending our money,” says Briggs. “I learned a lot on how I’m going to spend my money financially, on how much I’m going to spend on my house, and my food and cars, and what I want to do in life,” says Fisher.

Students enjoyed the opportunity to come out and learn the balance between wants and necessities and get a taste of reality.
