The Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi to hold a trunk or treat event on Oct. 30

In Meridian, the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi will be holding a drive-through trunk or treat event for children in the community to safely enjoy celebrating Halloween, while hoping to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi’s drive-through trunk or treat event will take place on Friday, October 30, from 6:30 pm-7:30 pm at its location on 45th Avenue.

The event is open to anyone in the Meridian Community or the surrounding counties, providing attendees with the opportunity to drive up and receive their treats while remaining in their cars, and wearing masks.

Jermaine Harris, the Director of Operations for the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi, shared that due to the pandemic the club could not hold its usual Halloween festivities.

“Last year and the last 2 years the past few years we had done a haunted house , so on top of our kids having a Halloween party within the club we always did a haunted house for the community, but you know with the pandemic and COVID, we're not nowhere near where we need to be, and with the second wave coming, we still don’t want to eliminate everything there is that we have to offer,” said Jermaine Harris.

He also shared that he hopes that this trunk or treat event will be a positive experience for children in the community, by providing them with a sense of normalcy.

“It’s just our way to go ahead and give back to the kids because there hasn’t been a whole lot of positive things that the kids can look forward to, but we're slowly trying to go ahead and do little things to go ahead and get back in the spirit of things and with this being one of the first holidays coming around, with Halloween, we wanted to go ahead and do something that was safe and positive for the youth,” said Harris.

For traffic control, a portion of 45th Avenue will be blocked off for the Boys and Girls Club of East Mississippi's trunk or treat event on Friday, October 30 from 6:30-7:30pm.
