The Choctaw Area Council of The Boy Scouts of America Kicks Off Their Calendar Year

Officially kicking off their calendar year, the Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America has implemented new changes due to the pandemic.

In March of this year, troops within the Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America stopped gathering as schools began to close due to the threat presented by the coronavirus.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19 amongst troops, each unit has been broken down into smaller groups. Troops are beginning to meet again as their new calendar year begins, some in person and some virtually.

“We actually have memorandums coming down from our national, telling us the do’s and don’ts as for our troops meeting to make sure the we go with our state guidelines as far as how many we can have inside for meetings, how many we can have outside for meetings. One thing we have been able to do is provide our virtual environment for our scouts, parents, and our leaders, to provide information to them to make sure that scouting continues, whether they be able to do it in person or have to do it at home,” said Brandon Bridges, District Executive for the Choctaw Area Council Boy Scouts of America.

Also sharing that August is their biggest month for scout recruitment, which has also been impacted due to not being able to visit schools.

“We had to change it up this year, so we’re pretty much leaning on our leaders to get that information out to their principals for the units that are aligned to different school’s to let them know, ‘hey, scouting is still here’. We have that personal connection with each other, what can we as scouts provide as far as helping out and everything,” said Bridges.

The Choctaw Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America is continuing to follow guidance from their national level and the CDC, hoping to hold their annual events for the new calendar year.
