The City of Newton Votes

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

Today citizens of The City of Newton will be voting to determine if the sale of alcohol will be allowed in hotels and restaurants. If the vote is passed it will be a historic moment for the town.

"We are having a special election to make a vote about whether Newton will become a resort town or not, which would allow us to serve alcohol in restaurants and hotels, and motels," said Don Veirs, Election Commissioner.

Veirs says right now in the city of newton they are only allowed to sell beers and wines and if this vote passes then it may very well have a positive impact on the city economically and bring in new businesses.

"We hope that it would open the base up to have national chains come in and restaurants and the restaurants that are here in the motels will be able to get conventions and things like that coming in," stated Veirs.

One local resident who says she voted for the resort status says it is not about drinking but about bringing revenue to the town.

"I'm for it the city of newton no need here. Yeah, we need that revenue badly, because that's the only way we're going gonna grow if we don't start doing something in this town other than raising the water bill," said local resident Marion Wheaton.

Another resident of voted today says this was a long time coming and is happy to take part in voting for a change for the city of newton.

"I feel very good about it. I think that is long overdue. I would have hoped that we could have done this a long time ago, but I'm very glad to see it happening now," stated local resident Nona Berry.

Votes will be tallied up later today after voting concludes. If the voters approve the city having resort status, Newton will see it go into effect around the end of this year.
