The Meridian Public Library's Summer Reading Program

Summer is here and many are taking advantage of the nice summer weather we’ve been having. The Meridian Public Library’s Summer Reading Program enjoyed books and sunshine today down at Bonita Lakes which is a change of scenery from reading books inside of the Library.

Mariposa Pigott, who is over the Children's Department had this to say, "Our main goal is to keep children of any age reading throughout the summer when there's a break from school, they get distracted and they should be distracted during the summer, having fun and doing fun things. But reading can be part of the fun and to have them continue on through the summer helps them in the next school year, to not lose any of their reading ability during the summer."

The theme for their Summer Reading Program is Oceans of Possibilities. Pigott said they have been reading all water and ocean-based book and thought reading at the Lake would make it a little more engaging.

"We do a lot of activities in the library for all ages. We really wanted to get out and have some sunshine and some fresh air for everybody, something different," said Pigott.

Under the tent parent and children sat as the enjoyed listening to the different stories.

Some of the kids wanted to share what they enjoyed the most and their favorite story from today's reading.

"How the books ended, I was really interested in the real-life story of Inky," said Raylan Jensen.

"It was the octopus! I like the octopus because he was gold," said Delaney Martin.

One parent who is a regular participant in the Summer Reading Program says she missed the last reading at the Lake and made sure not to miss this one.

"So we wanted to come today. Just to get out of the house and have something to do. And then it's educational," said Megan Martin.

The Meridian Public Library’s Summer Reading Program will continue for the remainder of the summer and each they with something different for all to enjoy.
