The Meridian Public-School District Delays Return To On-Campus Learning

The Meridian Public-School District has announced its plan to return to on-campus learning has been delayed, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across to state.

Rather than returning to the classroom, students will begin the 2020 to 2021 school year through the online learning method on Monday, August 10.

The Meridian Public-School District now plans to resume on campus learning on Tuesday, September 8. Until their return to in-person learning, students will learn virtually through the programs “Google Classroom” and “Canvas”, on Chromebooks provided by the district.

“Students who have already registered, they will be contacted by their building and so, once they contact their building, their buildings are setting up a time this week to pass out devices, currently we are looking at one device for every two students. So, that way we can make sure everyone gets at least on in their home,” said Lavonda Germany, MPSD Elementary Curriculum Director.

The district also plans to provide parents with assistance, to prepare them to help their students when learning from home.

“Principals are going to host an online ZOOM with parents, so that they can meet with parents and walk them through, you know, ‘this is the website your student will need to access to get to google, this is the website—you know, this is how you as a parent can help your child log on to ZOOM’. So, we are going to be just a phone call or a click away. We have a helpline that is being set up also, so that parents can call in to a helpline and we’ll have people that will be able to help them through the process,” said Germany.

The Meridian Public-School District will continue to use its automated messaging system, social media, and website to release additional information regarding the district’s plan for the 2020 to 2021 school year.
