A HISTORIC THEATER HERE IN MERIDIAN IS HOPING SOME UPCOMING EVENTS WILL HELP IT WEATHER TOUGH ECONOMIC TIMES
THE TEMPLE THEATER WAS BUILT IN 1924 AND WAS NAMED A HISTORICAL MONUMENT IN 1979. TWIN STATES NEWS DANNY TODD SPOKE WITH THE MANAGER ABOUT HIS PLANS TO PROSPER.
Roger Smith has faced adversity since the day he took over the Temple Theater. When taking over, he made a promise that he would make it flourish again for the people of Meridian. He is bound and determined to keep that promise, no matter how hard the situation may be.
ROGER SMITH- MANAGER OF THE TEMPLE THEATER tells Twin States News "It's the largest theater of its kind in the whole state and we've been running it for 13 years as a standalone theater. We're not federally funded. We're not funded by the city. So shows small and large is what keeps this theater going."
Roger Smith also tells Twin States news that this theater has been the cornerstone for a lot of professional acts. Elvis Presley, Jimmie Rodgers, and country Wayne are just a few of the greats who once graced the stage. But it isn't cheap to run a place like this, so the theater is looking to big events to keep it up and running.
Smith says "It runs and supports itself. It's one of the very few theaters in the state that is self-supporting, and we do that by bringing big shows and then local shows here. The young people don't really have an outlet to get before a big stage."
Smith points out that the one way you can help ensure the success of this local gem is to simply support the events and shows that they host. He adds, If you're planning to host your own event, this could be a perfect spot to do just that. Anyone can rent the theater out and take advantage of the big-time feel on what Smith calls a fairly modest budget.
Smith says "People always ask, why don't you do more movies? You don't do movies? Well, the only reason that we stopped doing movies is nobody came. And you can't heat or cool a huge building like this for five people."
