Tornado leaves destruction in Jasper County.

Jasper County, MS - What some say ended as a good family weekend, has now turned into a tragic loss.

“We had Father’s Day Dinner up here and sat around all day, the wind was cool, everything was good and then right after I left it started to thunder and lightning, and behold the storm came through and tore up my grandmother’s house.” - Alayashia Wilson

Alayashia Wilson is a resident of Laurel MS. She was at home when the confirmed tornado came through but made her way back to her grandmother’s house upon hearing about the destruction.

“I was heartbroken, I’ve never in my life seen anything like this. I’m 30 years old, and nothing like this has ever happened. Even when Hurricane Katrina came through, it was not this bad.”

The confirmed tornado is said to have come through just before midnight. Injuring eighteen people and claiming the life of at least one person.

Even though Alayashia’s grandmother is currently in the emergency room, Alayashia is happy to have the support of family during such a devastating time.

“It’s a relief to know that they’re okay, you know material things can be replace but lives can’t, so you know I’m thankful for that.”

The family says that although the homes might’ve been destroyed, they still cherish the fact that everyone is safe.
