Two Locals Help Keep your Furry Friends Warm

With a freeze warning on the way and the temperatures continuing to drop animal owners should also be making arrangements to ensure their pets stay safe and warm. A few caring local residents are ensuring your pets stay warm by giving out free bags of hay.

"So we're here today giving it away to everybody that needs it for their animals. Some people we know don't aren't able to keep their dogs inside and the animals that they have that may be farm animals. So we decided just to give away some hay," said Meghan Segovia, local volunteer.

With temperatures expected to get down below freezing and hay being sold for about 10$ a barrel, Segovia stated they wanted to spread a little Christmas cheer.

"We just know that hay is expensive right now if you have to go get it yourself. And you know, it's christmas time, so everybody's tight on money. So we just decided to give it away and spread some Christmas cheer and some love and kindness," stated Segovia.

Upon their arrival people were already waiting at the location to receive free hay to help keep their animals warm, Segovia stated they went through 22 bags of hay within 10 mins.

Local resident Ricky Myatt said," I just want to give the animals in my neighborhood that doesn't have shelter and stuff like that. We have a lot of cats in our area, so we got to try to keep them warm during this bad weather."

"Well, I got a text message from Lima about, don't forget about our pets during this hard freeze that we got coming our way. And so I wanted to do something for our dogs," said Jonas Carter.

"Well, I have a couple of dogs on the rather large size that I'm going to keep outside a little while we have our Christmas gathering, sadly. So for that little bit of time, will try to keep them warm up under some hay out in their pen," said Bruce Mitchelle.

Hay helps keep animals warm by reflecting their body heat back to them and repels moisture which makes an inexpensive way to keep your furry friends warm.

"Well, just place it away from fire and flame. Of course, you don't want it near anything that's going to catch fire in a close area, even if it's just a corner, you know, to where the animals can get in away from the wind. And that's about it because usually, animals are pretty good about getting in there and getting their warmth up," explained Segovia.
