Unity March To Take Place In Quitman On July 11

Looking ahead, a unity march to stand against social injustices is set to take place in Quitman this weekend.

The peaceful march and unity empowerment program scheduled on Saturday, July 11, is sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Committee of The Pinebelt and concerned citizens of Quitman and Clarke County.

The lineup for the march will be at 4:30 pm at the Sumrall Park where the march will begin at 5pm, from there the group will march to the Clarke County courthouse where the unity program will begin.

There will be live music, food and drinks, an opportunity for attendees to register to vote, and guest speakers to help deliver the message of the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Clarke County Native, Thaddeus Edmonson, event organizer and President of the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Committee of The Pinebelt shared why he decided to organize the march.

“We’re doing this because we’re trying to make people aware of what past racisms been and how can we eradicate racism when it comes to the law, when it comes to individuals, or whatever. The intent is to educate and empower one’s mind about what’s really going on in some areas, and discrimination and we’re trying to eradicate that through education”, said Thaddeus Edmonson, event organizer and President of the Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Committee of The Pinebelt.

He also offered a reminder for those planning to attend the event, once again stating that this event is to create a sense of unity in the Quitman community.

“We will not break any laws, whatsoever. There will not be any violence or anything of this nature impact. This is a peaceful march and we’re asking everybody to come and be a part of it,” said Edmonson.

The organizers of the unity march in Quitman are asking that participants wear masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 at the march on Saturday, July 11.
