Meridian, MS - The month of September is recognized as National Voter Registration Month; and although it is now October, Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson expressed there is still little time for new voters to get registered. “In the state of Mississippi this is the deadline week, if you’re new to the area, and you want to vote in our upcoming November general election. You’ve got new neighbors, new coworkers, new church members, new friends, and if they’re not registered, they need to come see us.”
She also emphasized the importance of voters making sure all their information is up to date. “We make a joke and say every time your pillow changes, we need to know it, but that’s basically what it boils down to, because we want your vote to count.”Every time you move, voters need to also change their address with us. It’s so important for you to be voting in the right place so your vote will count.”
Johnson encourages anyone unsure of their voting area to pay close attention to their Voter Registration Card. “It shows what senate, what house, what school district, what supervisor you’re in, so we put a lot of emphasis on those voter registration cards.”
Circuit Clerk Donna Jill says it’s important to remember, wherever you move, you need to be registered to vote, and the voter registration deadline for new voters is this coming Monday, October 9th.
