Wayne County, MS - Today is the National Day of Concern about Young People and Gun Violence. A day were thousands of students across the country take a stand to pledge against gun violence among today’s youth. Students at Wayne County High School have decided to join in on the pledge.

“It is important for them to realize and know, one decision does just not affect you, it affects everyone that you are connected to.” says Zanetia Henry.

Zanetia Henry, is the Mississippi State Lead of Voices of Black Mothers United, and having lost her child to gun violence, she continues to push the message out to the youth in the community. “Everything that I do, I do for two people, when I walked in this gym and spoke to these children, I was not only speaking for myself, but speaking for my son Dre, but also speaking for all other mothers and children whose lost their lives.”

Student, Ella Revette expressed the affect gun violence can have on other students. “It’s so hard coming to school with somebody, and the next, them not being in your class.”

She also hopes spreading awareness of this issue will change the community for the better. “It’s not normal, it’s not the Wayne County I know, and I just hope that one day we can get back to normal.”

Teachers and Faculty at Waynes County High School say that as students took the pledge, they hope they understood the message, to think, not bring a gun, and to put an end to gun violence.
