Today schools in Lauderdale County kicked off their first day back in class

Southeast Middle school teachers and students are ready to get the school year started. I took a look inside classrooms and spoke with teachers and principals to see how their day has been so far and the steps they are taking to keep students safe this year.
“My expectation was that they do what their parents ask them to do and roll with it and that’s exactly what they’ve done. We’ve got great kids, they are resilient and so I’m proud of them and I knew they would do that", said Britany Cheney, Principal of Southeast Middle School.
Fifth grade teacher, Melodie Black was excited to have her students back in class with here.
“I am absolutely thrilled to be back in person, 5 days a week. Being able to see my children, their expressions, their faces. Being a teacher those non-verbal cues are very important for us to know if the child is fully understands the concept; it's just important to bond emotionally with the child”
The school has also rerouted how classes are changing rooms throughout the day to cut back on the number of students that are in the hallways at once.
“How to change classes safely. Where to walk, how to walk. Some classes change, some don’t. So they're learning that new bell schedule. There will be less people in the hall, so it's really been helpful. So when everybody comes back Monday, they're going to know the procedures, it'll be less chaotic.” -Britany Cheney, Principal of Southeast Middle School.
“Parents pay attention to kids, if your child mentions any of the symptoms of COVID that CDC has said those are symptoms of COVID. Pay attention to those things and if you feel it's the best thing to keep your child home then do that. If they say they don’t feel good, listen and see what those symptoms are.” -Britany Cheney, Principal of Southeast Middle School.
All students will return to school Monday, August 9th
