As a result of the pandemic some families have dealt with significant financial holds; the Wesley House Community Center has stepped up to help supply families with weekly food drives.
The Wesley House Community Center is having a drive-by food
pick up. The center has this food pick every Wednesday of the month that allows
For anyone in the community to come by and pick up a bag filled with produce,
meats, and canned goods.
Executive Director, Rev. David Schutltz, explained what the community centers' goal is when doing in the food drive.
"The goal that we have is to provide a full food bag a good
variety of food so that there are meat products, vegetables, can product, fresh
fruit, dairy, and cheese products. Those things. That’s the goal and sometimes
it depends on what’s available.”
“It helps a lot of these elderly people from getting out in
the community and shopping. A lot of our customers are the elderly and they’re the
ones that I think are trying to out from getting sick, so it supplies them with
food, it keeps them out of the public, just gives us a chance to help them out”, said volunteer Andy Hodges.
In response to the coronavirus, Wesley House has doubled
how many food bags they give out; last month increasing to about 700 bags
being distributed. With that increase, the demand for food and donations has
also risen.
“Not only for families. Mothers and children. One of the
things we’ve seen with the coronavirus is an increase in the elderly that are
coming in for food bags. Those who go to the store are difficult. It’s a
challenge for them to get out, the mask, be among the public, and the other
thing is that they're on a fixed income so the prices have all gone up so
they're limited so therefore we’re able to supplement their monthly food.”
On Wednesday, today, we’re looking to distribute. I’m sure
we’ll distribute well over 300 and some bags.”- Rev. David Schutltz
