Winter Weather cause rise in respiratory Illnesses.

jroby5

Meridian, MS - As the holiday spirit and winter weather is on the rise, so are respiratory illnesses; and according to Doctor Caleb Mason of EC HealthNet, cold temperatures, and staying indoors are part of the reason.“Typically, in the winter months, these viruses survive a bit better in the colder weather, and they’re able to be transmitted a lot easier. Anytime you’re in close contact and not outside getting exercise in the warm weather, anytime you’re near somebody else, you tend to pass these respiratory droplet viruses a lot easier.”

Viruses such as the Flu, COVID-19, or RSV tend to have similar symptoms, so how can someone tell what viruses they may have? “The best thing to do if you want to know what you have is to go to a doctor and get tested for each one,” says Dr. Mason

While there are vaccines and different medicines that someone can take, Doctor Mason also emphasized things you can do to be cautious. “Wear your mask, I know that we always practice social distancing, but especially while this is going around, it’s really important. Secondly, if you do start developing symptoms make sure you come see us and let us get you on the medicine that will give you the best chance to fight it.”

As the holidays are here, and cool weather starts to move into the area, doctors are encouraging people to be careful when they feel sick and to be cautious when gathering with others.
